“Learned institutions ought to be favorite objects with every free people.  They throw that light over the public mind which is the best security against crafty and dangerous encroachments on the public liberty.”  James Madison, December 5, 1810

The Literate Citizen is the project of Mary Grabar, Ph.D., (English, University of Georgia 2002) untenured outcast among more sophisticated colleagues who do “cutting-edge” scholarship like digital spectacle of transgendered sex workers. I actually think reading (the traditional, linear kind) is needed in order to maintain our freedoms and form of government.  This site is an effort to promote literacy in all its forms and to report on the myriad means which the educational establishment uses to undermine it.

Reading actual history presented in its pure form only serves to refute lies being told to us in every way imaginable. Books offer us all an opportunity to seek out what went right and what went wrong. Those that want us to remain illiterate, do so for personal reasons.
